GENERAL BENEFITS

Typical benefits associated with surfing reefs include erosion protection local increase in species diversity and abundance increased sales by surf shops establishment of viable surf schools a venue for local, national and international competitions increased trade for local food and accommodation businesses, and, the provision of a facility to improve the participation and standard of local surfers.
International studies of the benefit/cost ratios associated with the development of a surfing reef indicate that the benefits are much greater than the costs. The preliminary benefit/cost ratio for the Lyall Bay reef would be well in excess of 30:1.

EFFECTS TO CURRENT USAGE

The recommended location for a surfing reef at Lyall Bay has little, and mostly no, impact on the current usage of Lyall Bay. Indeed, many user groups expressed their support. However, the recommended reef location may encroach on the SLC competition arena (mid-way out to sea on the eastern side) The probable impacts on competition and ways of sharing the area will be addressed in the future to enable all user groups to meet their aspirations.
