The most common wind is from the North (60% of the time when the wind strength is greater than 5 knots) the remaining winds come mostly from the south (38% of the time when the wind strength is greater than 5 knots). This wind climate is favourable for surfing, with the majority being offshore (Northerlies) and the strongest, wave generating winds, being onshore (Southerlies). Wind conditions are favourable for surfing 65% of the time. As the wind and swell conditions are favourable, an artificial reef would greatly improve surfing conditions without adversely affecting the beach and bay environment. RECOMMENDED REEF LOCATION
A surfing reef is likely to provide quality surfing conditions at least 32-39% of the time or 118-142 days per year, depending on its distance offshore (the further offshore the greater the negative impact of offshore winds). The best existing break known as the 'Corner' breaks an estimated 7.5% of the time or 27 days each year. Thus, the reef would provide an additional 91 to 115 days of quality surfing conditions each year at Lyall Bay. The wave height gradient across Lyall Bay makes it an exceptional location where surfing conditions to meet all skill levels of surfers could be available. Erosion in the area known as the 'Bend' has been identified by the WCC as a problem that needs attention. Offshore reefs can provide coastal protection, via the salient that forms in its lee, with low impact on the adjacent coastline An example of the possible coastal protection that an offshore reef at Lyall Bay could provide the 'Bend'. An offshore, submerged reef will provide protection for this section of the beach without the negative aspects associated with other possible solutions. The reef has the added benefits of amenity enhancement (e.g. high-quality surfing waves, wider beach for shore-base activities, etc.).
